Diego Forlan had just one thing on his mind. ‘Cachavacha’ was determined for Uruguay to finish a tournament they began with just one World Cup win in 40 years with a bronze medal. That eluded the men in sky blue, with Germany winning 3-2 for their 11th podium finish in 15 participations. Forlan did, however, pocket two prizes from his sophomore global finals. The 31-year-old’s regal volley past Jorg Butt – his third goal from outside the box in South Africa – aided his edging of Wesley Sneijder and David Villa to the adidas Golden Ball. It made him only the second man to receive the award despite not playing in the final, after Toto Schillaci in 1990. Shortly after its conclusion, Forlan’s gem against Germany was voted the Goal of the Tournament.
“When I saw the cross coming towards me, my first thought was to make sure I didn’t slip, because it was very wet,” explained Forlan. “My second was to hit it down into the ground because, on that surface, I knew it would make it difficult for the goalkeeper. Fortunately it went in. “The awards were for the entire team and the whole of Uruguay. They made us really proud.”
